Dental disease is one of the most common diseases we see in our furry companions and it is easily prevented with routine oral care at home combined with professional cleanings. Gum disease and plaque accumulation lead to inflammation of the gingival tissues and localized infection - - normal healthy gums should be pale pink right down to the tooth surface. Normal teeth are bright pearly white with a nice glossy sheen. Over 80% of pets have some level of gum disease, which leads to bad breath, bacteria entering the blood stream, bone loss and loosening of teeth, painful tooth abscesses and even enamel defects in some pets.

What is a Professional Cleaning?

A complete professional cleaning of your pets teeth is no small thing! Because pets do not understand that we are trying to help them, a professional cleaning is performed under anesthesia. This allows our dental certified assistants and doctors to thoroughly evaluate your pet's mouth and remove all plaque and tartar. The most important plaque to remove is the plaque that you never see - - the 10-15% of plaque that has worked its way up under the gums - - this plaque is holding bacteria up against the back side of the gingiva causing inflammation and allowing bacteria direct access to the blood system. This inflammation also leads to bone loss and loosening of the teeth. We also perform full mouth dental x-rays to evaluate the roots of your pet's teeth - - since your pet cannot tell us if a tooth hurts, this is a very important part of our oral exam to make sure that there are no painful areas that cannot be seen externally.

At Eastgate Veterinary Clinic we also have a veterinarian with a special interest in Dentistry - Dr. Andrea Van De Wetering.  This gives our doctors the option of advanced dentistry for your pet if that is appropriate.

We offer a comprehensive wellnesss dental package for your pet which includes:

  • General anesthesia, with additional pain management if indicated (local anesthetic and antiinflammatory injection)
  • IV fluids (throughout the procedure)
  • Full mouth dental x-rays (so we can see the portion of the tooth below the gumline)
  • Cleaning and polishing of all teeth
  • Complimentary two week dental recheck
  • $150 off Coupon
